The City

Florianópolis is the capital and the second largest city of Santa Catarina state in the Southern region of Brazil. It is composed of one main island, the Island of Santa Catarina (Ilha de Santa Catarina), a continental part, and the surrounding small islands. The city is known for having a very high quality of life, being the Brazilian capital city with the highest HDI (0.905) according to the UN. The economy of Florianópolis is heavily based on information technology, tourism, and services. With its 42 beaches, Floripa, as Brazilians call the city, is one of the best surfing towns in the world.




The University

The Federal University of Santa Catarina (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, UFSC) is one of the leading Latin American institutions of higher education. Ranked as the 4th best overall university in Latin America by the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, it is the third largest university in Brazil, the fifth largest in Latin America, and the only Federal University in the state of Santa Catarina. Noted for its engineering school, UFSC is internationally recognized for the quality of its courses in mechanical, control, sanitary, and electrical engineering. Located in the Trindade neighbourhood of Florianópolis, its campus is organized in 11 Centers of Education (Centros de Ensino), divided by field of study. Every center is composed of departments, the largest being the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The oldest is the Center for Juridical Science, or the Department of Law, officially recognized in 1932. The University has its roots in the Polytechnic Institute of Florianópolis, founded in 1917 as the first college-degree-granting institution of Santa Catarina.


Venue and Accommodation

Classes will be held in the Mechanical Engineering building of the Federal University of Santa Catarina. (see Dates and Costs).

The location is about about 10 km from Hercílio Luz International Airport.

The participants can find affordable accommodation, shops, and restaurants in the area.
